"The Friend of His People" is the inscription at the base of the tankard, a deeply inappropriate comment on a man who was anything but friendly to his people. The date of his accession, January 20th 1936 is inscribed alongside the date of 12th May 1937 which eventually became the date of the coronation of his brother King George VI, a true friend to his people who rose to the challenge.
