The enclosed coin confirms this goblet was made during or after 1866. That same year Queen Victoria presided over the opening of parliament for the first time since Prince Albert’s death in January 1861. The relevance to this event may or may not offer a possible reason for its production or perhaps the marriage on the 5th July of the Queens’s daughter Princess Helena to Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein at Windsor. It is however debatable that the goblet postdates 1885 by virtue the use of gothic letters for the initials. Gothic was very much out of favour.
It is possible that the JP is John Penfold the architect who designed the hexagonal post boxes in 1866 a few of which still exist. These were installed throughout GB and Ireland.
