Often referred to as “Butlers tasting glasses” on the basis that one bowl is for red wine and one for white. This does not pass the common sense test. A butler or sommelier would wish to see the colour of the wine and would prefer a larger bowl to capture the aroma.
Wine and drinking glasses with two bowls are known from the 18th century when glass was costly and being able to use one glass rather than two represented a cost saving. By the time this was manufactured the cost argument is no longer valid. glass was being smashed in taverns nationwide. We believe this to be nothing more than an attractive novelty. We may be wrong but will be happy in our ways until proved otherwise.
