Similar glasses engraved “succefs to the EAGLE FRIGATE privateer” and “success to the navy” are well known. The story of the “Bristol Privateers” is excellent reading. We have only seen two genuine 18th century privateer glasses one in the Hubbard collection sold at Bonhams in November 2011 . The other was in the Peter Mayer collection.
We do not know who made these reproductions however. the Edinburgh and Leith glassworks made replica Jacobites. James Powell and sons also made glass in earlier Georgian and Venetian styles to meet demand in the early 20th century as did the specilaist ” Georgian Glass Company” . Hill . The bowl on a Georgian original is noticeably smaller. This also lacks correct tooling marks and the glass itself is too refined. That said with the genuine article being beyond reach for all but the most well heeled of collectors then a copy may suffice.
