Additional Information : The ‘English Cart Horse Society’ was founded in 1878 but changed its name to ‘Shire Horse Society’ in 1884. The organisation was inspired by the enthusiasm of King Edward VII. with the purpose of improving the quality and care of Shire horses which were in high demand in various countries throughout the world. This demand declined following the Second World War with the availability of lower cost mechanical solutions in agriculture. Thankfully the sheer determination and passion of members involved hauled this historical society into the modern era with the introduction of a National show. enthusiasts from all around the globe could now addend to appreciate these magnificent creatures. Since 2013 the society has been based at a purpose built home in the grounds of Rockingham Castle in Leicestershire with the national show opening every March.
