Description: A copper alloy pendant mount for horses harness with suspension loop to top. Shield-shaped. it shows the arms of the Leyourne family; in heraldic terms: ‘Azure. six lions rampant argent.’ The mount. or pendant as they are sometime referred to. were placed on the peytrel across the chest. the browband across the head or the cupper across the flanks.

Features and Provenance: The most notable members of the medieval Leybourne family are Sir Roger de Leybourne (1215-1271) and his son Admiral Sir William de Leybourne (1242-1310). Roger was a knight given lands in Kent by Henry III including Elham Manor and the village of Leeds. where he later built his castle. He allied with Lord Edward and Simon de Montfort during the Baron’s Wars. then switching sides to become a favourite of the king. His son William served under Edward I and II and had military close association with Sandwich and Winchelsea in Kent. but his heart was out to sea rather than the army and he rose to Admiral.
