Description: A long silver pin decorated with multiple collars above and below a square panel decorated with pelleted annulets motif. The top of the piece has a spoon-shaped finial typically used as a ear scoop or cosmetics spoon.
Size and Weight: 122mm x 4mm. 8.8g
Features and Provenance: Brooches had been the principal means to fasten cloaks and clothes during Roman and most of the Saxon period. During the late Saxon era pins of base metal were introduced and generally used by women to secure a cloak and indeeed their hair.
With the arrival Viking culture arrived the use of pine became more widespread and they were made made of silver with ornate ends and used by both men and women. This finely decorated example. has a handy spoon or scoop to the end for cosmetic or medical use. One such considered use was as an ear scoop! Vikings were particularly proud of their appearance. and cleaned their hair. ears and beards. Lice were a problem even for a Norseman.
