Luxurious stone such as alabaster and calcite were carved to produce high status vessel such as our example as well as amulets, statues and scarabs. This vessel was probably used for cosmetics, precious oils or perfumes and there may have originally been a domed lid to prevent evaporation, but we will never know. They were polished to perfection but our example has stood the test of time and shows the rigors of its 2000 years resting place! The encrustations attach very easily to this relatively soft stone . This has been in sea water and there are some aquatic concretions
