Features and Provenance: Ex Spink
Gordian was the youngest ever sole emperor. being only 13 when he came to the throne. After the death of his grandfather and uncle he inherited great wealth and this attracted the then co-emperors. Pupienus and Bulbinus. He was so well liked by the emperors. senate. army and people alike that the emperors adopted him and made him their heir by making him a Caesar. In 238. Bulbinus and Pupienus were overthrown and Gordian ascended to the throne with little opposition. but due to his young age the Senate made the policies. His coinage is quite wide considering the short reign and most of must have been paid for out his personal wealth. He married Tranquilina in 241 and a small coinage was produced to celebrate this. Sadly. a coup by Philip I lead to his murder in 244.
