This piece with it’s purple. green. and white gems is in the colours of the WSPU – the Womens Social and Political Union. This necklace signifies support for the Suffragette movement. The Votes for Women movement engaged in a number of controversial activities including hunger strikes. bombings. vandalism and civil disobedience.The Suffragettes declared themselves to be terrorists in 1913 and inspired the original IRA.
A moment of particular note is their burning down of Woolwich Arsenal Footall Club’s stadium in 1914. This was sadly a double edged sword. If there was any justice in the world this would have been the end of the most despicable sporting establishment in the world. It was however relocated north of the river.
