Clearly a present for a lady, this romantic heart shaped pill or trinket box has a repousse scene of a minstrel serenading a lady on the lid.  The body is ornately decorated in typical Victorian style with scrolls, flowers and trellis work.

The technique of repousse work involves hammering a sheet of malleable metal from behind, either freehand or into a mould.  Many Victorian silversmiths adopted this technique as the desire for ever more decorative pieces increased. This heart shaped box shows what could be achieved by this method and would make a very romantic gift in the 21st century.

The perfect Valentines gift
