Decoration : Reeded capitals to both which contain hallmarked. removable sconces with a petal design around the aperture; the reeded. inverted baluster stems are decorated with acorns and oak-leaves. other floral motifs. and rouched swags. The shoulders of the bases are left as plain reserves above scrolling. foliate rims; these reserves feature an engraved heraldic device – a single instance on each candlestick – which is a pheon (an inverted. barbed arrow with a hollow socket tang) over a torse (see below).

Notes : The heradic device signifies the Sidney family. estate holders at Penshurst Place – barely half a dozen miles from our base on The Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells; the Sidney’s are a noble family. bearing the title of the Earls of Leicester for seven generations throughout the 16th. 17th and 18th centuries. A forebear. Sir William Sidney was a notable military commander under Henry VIII and lead part of the English army at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. at which the Scots were defeated and their king – James IV – became the last monarch to die on a British battlefield. The pub in the centre of Penshurst village – the Leicester Arms – displays a ‘pheon’ as its sign. as shown in our images
