Neo-classicism was the leading style in the 1760s and the characteristic shape candlestick was a straight or tapering column on a raised square or oval concave base with indented sections. This example. with its baluster stem and octagonal base. is one of the many variants that were widely produced. Casting the stem in one piece using a removable core allowed for a much finer and thinner casting to be made for both the base and the stem and enabled push rods to be used.
