Heading Danish Sterling Silver Margrethe Cup – Toxværd & Michelsen c1940
Date : Hallmarked in Denmark for Mr Sven Toxværd with 925S
Origin : Denmark
Decoration : Flared bowl consisting of eight fluted panels with vertical rope-twists in between; three bands of repousse engraving (floral/foliate pattern); residual gilding both inside and out.
Size : 6.9 cm tall – 8.2 cm diameter
Condition : Very good; no dents; one fine scratch to the bowl; one of the ‘petals’ which forms the base has been bent upwards a little
Restoration : None
Weight : 122 grams (a little under 4 troy oz)
It is claimed that fearful of being poisoned Queen Margrethe of Scandinavia devised a multi section cup such that the contents could be tested by courtiers before she drank herself.
