Description

Chelsea-Derby Sevres Style Plate c1775

The Chelsea factory was heavily influenced by the “Royal factory of Vicennes” and Sevres style wares were produced from 1758/9 onwards. One supposes that this was a continuation of the flagrant copying of Meissen during the red anchor period when they produced “Chelsea Toys” such as etuis and bodkin cases that had precise botanical depictions of flowers in the Germanic style. This propensity to “copy” styles continued following the purchase by William Duesbury of Derby in 1770.

The dish has “coquilles with gros bleu”  to use the Sevres terminology. scallops outlined with mazarin blue. and gilded edges with floral decoration. It has a gilded dentile border. The rim has a single chip that measures 9mm by 3mm at worst. This is shown in the photographs. We may arrange for this to be restored for you upon request. The anchor with D mark is 5/16ths of an inch (9mm) and the footstring has three “stilt” marks as collectors demand. Diameter 21.5 cms . height 4.3 cms
