Circular baskets with the sides made from interlocking circles were first made by Worcester in 1758. The florets on the external surfaces are not merely decorative. They were applied to strengthen the intersections once the basket was pierced. They are often referred to as “chestnut baskets” but their purpose may have been no more than decorative.
