Lids and baskets were numbered to ensure that each lid and its numbered equivalent base for which it was intended did not become separated. This suggests therefore that this may be a marriage or the numbering system was ignored by the factory as many lids did not make it through firing. In the Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain John Sandon explains this most eloquently and makes a very strong case for mismatched numbers being the rule rather than the exception.
