Worcester Caudle Cup Saucer and Lid. C.1780
Two handled chocolate cups are well known. however this would be a very large example. Caudle cups are also documented and have a propensity to be larger. Caudle was known in England from the middle ages. a mixture of wines. spices. syrup and breadcrumbs or oatmeal. To this saffron. dried fruits and a manner of ingredients would be added for their restorative properties and given to the sick and infirm. hence the twin handles. This is fluted and ribbed with a turquoise blue border with black and white chain link decoration. The gilding to the floral finial and double scroll handles is in outstanding condition. There is minor rubbing to the gilding in the centre of the saucer .There is an old restoration to the rim of the saucer. It is a rare piece.

In excellent condition similar cups have realised in excess of £1000 at auction. It stands 5 1/4 inches high. the bowl is 4 1/8th inches diameter and the saucer 6 inches.
