Description
This is the final partnership version of the Queen Charlotte pattern. the Flight Barr and Barr version.
The saucer has the impressed FBB mark as shown. This is a London shaped cup with a “7” shaped handle with pronounced thumb rest. It is in outstanding condition with no chips or cracks. A short section of giding on the rim. approximatey 1cm in length. has been restored. This is detected via a very slight change in colour and texture. It does not owever detract from the piece but we must mention this and have reflected this in the price
The pattern takes inspiration from Japanese Imari wares and it was a widely copied style both in Europe and China. Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz met the soon to be George111 at the marriage altar and became Queen just two weeks later. We know that the King and Queen visited the factory in 1788 and made purchases but it is most likely that Worcester simply took the opportunity to use the name Queen Charlotte as a marketing ploy. Had the Queen herself inspired a design then surely it would be reasonable to expect something more teutonic. less oriental and almost certainly a design containingg flora as she is known to have been a very keen botanist. Queen Charlotte is also more memorable a name than. “fence pattern” or “fruit and moths” and thus the marketing ploy is still working almost 250 years later.
