John Rose was presented with the Society of Arts award on May 30th 1820 as shown on the elaborate printed mark that dominates the underside of the base. For an image of an identical example also described as ‘Rare’
See: Coalport and Coalbrookdale Porcelains. Godden A Geoffrey. plate 170. and pages 18 and 19 for a discussion on the variations of the elaborate mark used.
John Rose was awarded the gold medal for a lead free glaze which had previously been recognised as an often fatal poisoning agent and regrettably still was a century and more later.
