Although invariably called ‘pastille burners’ or night lights we do not believe this to be anything other that a piece of early Victorian frippery. Yes the chimney will allow smoke to pass but it is just too small to enable any pastille to be introduced that would burn for sufficient time to fragrance a room.
These do make the most charming Christmas decorations.
