The Corieltavi were a Celtic tribe situated in the East Midlands, their chief settlements being Leicester and Lincoln. Little was know about the tribe until the 1960’s when archaeologists unearthed coin minting equipment and elegant pottery fragments. They were an agricultural tribe and rich too: producing gold coins when other tribes had ceased. However, they gave little resistance to the Romans and were quickly turned into a civitas around AD 44.
