As techniques progressed, basic eating utensils developed to include such luxuries as plates. As most people used their fingers and possibly a knife to eat, plates were used for serving rather than for the individual. As time progressed plates were made from metals and glass too. Firing, moulding and durable glazes resulted in longlasting and waterproof tableware which became an everyday item.
