Despite his short reign of less than four years. Caligula is one of the most infamous and talked about Roman Emperors.  His reputation for cruelty. extravagance and insatiable desires has become the stuff of legend.  Instead of trying to further the causes of the Roman Empire he concentrated on increasing the unconstrained personal power of the emperor himself.  This eventually led to his downfall and he was assassinated in 41AD. at the age of only 28. by the Praetorian Guard under the direction of the Senate.

Caligula was a nickname bestowed upon him by his troops on campaign. “Little boots”. One of the most licentious Romans in history.
