Comments

Arthur Barlow was brother to the celebrated Barlow sisters of Hannah. Florence and Lucy and like Hannah studied at the Lambeth School of Art for seven years. He also studied sculpture at the Royal Academy as an evening student but had to leave as the demands were at odds with his failing health. Whilst at the Lambeth art school he caught the attention of their influential Director John Sparkes who recognised Arthur’s flair and originality and who in turn brought him to the attention of Henry Doulton who took him into his employ in 1871

Arthur was far better suited to modelling and decorating in clay and showed an ability of doing so at a rapid pace whilst applying his fertile imagination to great effect by producing pots with harmonious and pleasing designs.  However. sadly. this was a case of promise unfulfilled as a result his premature death in 1879 at the early age of 34. Having spent only seven years at Doulton’s his works tend to be relatively scarce whilst somewhat overshadowed by the prolific works of his sisters. For a jug of this same form and differing decoration with a silver hinged cover See ; Doulton Lambeth Wares. Eyles D Plate32.
