Additional Information :
Note the ‘old’ spelling of ‘Tonbridge Wells’ – the use of “Tunbridge Wells” was not formalised until the machinations of the GPO and the South Eastern Railway dictated that should be the ‘correct’ usage in the mid 19th century. George Dawe the print-maker died in 1829. hence the approximate date of the piece at c 1820; the extent of construction shown to the eastern side of London Road is also far less than that evidenced on the map in Colbran’s 1839 Tunbridge Wells Guide.
