Additional Information Chelsea Hospital was founded by King Charles II as an establishment to care for ‘sick and superannuated soldiers who (had) been engaged in the service of their country’. Its construction seems to have been a tortuous process. until Sir Christopher Wren was engaged to supervise completion.

In common with many other contemporary publications. the book in which this image was first published had a spectacular title which – in full – was ‘A New Display Of The Beauties Of England. Or A Description Of The Most Elegant Or Magnificent Public Edifices. Royal Palaces. Noblemen’s  And Gentlemen’s Seats And Other Curiosities. Natural Or Artificial In The Different Parts Of The Kingdom’.
