Additional Information : The house was built in stages from the 1780’s to completion in 1852; this engraving was produced for England’s Topographer or a New and Complete History of the County of Kent. which was published around 1830; this is a little at odds with dates for the construction of the octagonal tower. which is stated as having been started in 1838. It’s not beyond the bounds of possibility. however. that the illustrators were made aware of the plans and were able to view either architect G L Taylor’s plans. or the existing tower at Fonthill Abbey (Wiltshire) on which the new edifice was based. and were therefore able to ensure that their work included the upcoming project.
