Archibald Thorburn was born is Midlothian. He was the fifth son of Robert Thorburn who was a portrait miniaturist to Queen Victoria. He trained locally. in Edinburgh. and finally at the newly formed St John’s Wood School of Art in London. He specialised in nature and is particularly well remembered for his depictions of animals and flowers in Invernesshire. He was exhibited many times at the Royal Academy. A naturalist to the end. upon the advent of electric lighting he refused to have it in his house and continued to paint by candlelight until his death in 1935.
