Clifford Hall trained at Putney Art School before studying at various Royal Academy schools. He is best known for his post-war melancholic paintings of people with material draped over their heads.
The following is an extract from the artists own diary provided by his son
“July 22. 1963
I cut a large rose from the garden and put it in a tumbler of water and spent all day painting it. It was a most exciting thing and I am glad to say I quite forgot it was a rose whilst I was working. How much of the excitement I have been able to get is another matter. My results always fall far short of what I want and yet. there are times when I feel they are surprisingly better than I would have expected – had I expected.
The sun was shining all day and it has been beautifully warm. We had dinner out of doors and sat long after it got dark.”
