Northumbrian-born Crawhall studied briefly in Paris in his early twenties. and is primarily known for his association with The Glasgow Boys with whom he was at the vanguard of the so-called ‘second wave’; the Impressionist body of work attributed to this renowned cadre was – for the most part – entirely at odds with the traditional canon of the artistic establishment. but Crawhall’s funeral was attended by the President of the achingly-conservative Royal Scottish Academy (Sir James Guthrie). indicative of the high regard in which he was held by even diametrically-opposed contemporaries.
