Lt. General Sir William Henry Barnard was an army officer and amateur watercolourist. Born to a vicar. who was himself a keen watercolourist. Barnard was educated at Westminster and Sandhurst before being commissioned in the Grenadier Guards in 1814. It was quite common at the time for British officers to be acomplished artists and watercolourists abounded in both the Army and the Navy.
Barnard had a deocrated career including stints in both the Crimea and India where he succumbed to cholera in 1857.An image of him during this campaign is included
