The Reverend John Louis Petit was born to a prosperous Huguenot family in Lancashire and educated at Eton and Trinity College Cambridge. He split his time between the Church. architectural history. and painting. His preferred locations were Essex. Kent (the county of his marriage). and Staffordshire. Andrew Graham-Dixon has said of Petit that he is “an artist whose work. particularly in the medium of watercolour. reaches the highest peaks of innovation and virtuosity. worthy of comparison with that even of Turner.” High praise indeed.
