Samuel Prout was famed primarily as a masterful watercolourist of architectural painting. His student. the great John Ruskin. praised him as a pioneer of accurate depictions of ruinous buildings. Until Prout. Ruskin claimed. ruins looked as though “broken down on purpose; what weeds they put on seemed put on for ornament.” He was aso a pioneer of lithography and was appointed ‘Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary’ to the King George IV and Queen Victoria.
