Features and Provenance: Charles IV (1604-1675) was the Duke of Lorraine (Franco/German province; now in France) from 1625 to 1634, but was then pressured by the French invasion of Lorraine into abdicating in favour of his brother Nicolas François. After fighting for the Imperial army, he was eventually reinstated, but resentment against encroaching French power led to a lifelong fight against France.
