Cockfighting in the UK became illegal in1853 and until then and fone some decades after it remained a popular theme for engravers. Most glasses engraved with depictions of cockfifgting are late Victorian. This fact alone demonstrates that those who knew where to find a “mains” continued to enjoy their ‘sport’ after it became criminal. This is the first 18th century glass that we have offered for sale depicting cockfighting.
