Boardingham is a Yorkshire name with the surname having clusters around the vale of York and Beverley in the east riding of “God’s own county”. The name “Goathland” was bestowed upon the area by the Vikings and it has stuck.
There is one most noteworthy individual amongst the Boardingham’s. namely Elizabeth (the mother of Robert. whose name is on the tankard). in 1776 she was tried and convicted for petty treason having persuaded her lover to kill her husband – a career criminal. One Thomas Aikney duly despatched John Boardingham to the grave having knifed him. However. he was deemed to have been under the influence and control of a woman – Elizabeth – and as this was deemed to contravene the natural order of things in which Yorkshire men rank above Yorkshire women. her conviction was petty treason rather than murder. The penalty was to see her become the last person to be burned at the stake in Yorkshire in 1776.
The practice of burning women was brought to an end shortly after Elizabeth’s conflagrant demise – an issue on which William Wilberforce cut his teeth before campaigning for the cause which ensured that his name will be remembered for eternity. Another Yorkshireman.
