A stunning Georgian VOC Dutch East India Company Glass Tumbler c1741.
The Dutch East India Company (in Dutch – Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie. VOC. “United East India Company”) was established in 1602. when the States General of the Netherlands granted it a 21-year monopoly to carry out colonial activities in Asia. It is considered to have been the first multinational corporation and also the first company in the world to issue stock. In its day. the company powers were staggering. including the ability to wage war. imprison and execute convicts. negotiate treaties. mint coinage and print money. and establish colonies. Statistically. the VOC eclipsed all of its rivals in the far east trade and between 1602 and 1796 sent almost a million Europeans to work in Asian and far eastern trade on almost 5000 ships
Over the years we have had a few smaller tumblers engraved with the VOC. This ranks amongst the best and is certainly the earliest. It is tapered with the famous VOC engraved within a cartouche formed by floral sprays and the year “1741” . A large basket of carnations opposite and floral engraved rim. Snapped pontil to the base.
It has no chips cracks or restoration and is in excellent clean condition. measuring 5 7/8 inches tall with a 4 5/8 inch rim and 3 3/8 inch base. It holds 33 fluid ounces. a goliath tumbler.
