John was clearly very proud to be a Dragoon having spent so much time to engrave it. He was from Bury in Lancashire and joined the 4th in 1828 aged 19 and was creditably discharged aged 34. He may then have taken a further commission in the 49th foot. The regiment were in Ireland from 1832 – 1835 and again from 1841 – 1844.
