Description

A Georgian Bohemian Engraved Glass Tumbler c1740

It has a tapered bowl as to be expected. however. engraved with pagodas and flowers !

We believe it was the Portuguese who starteed to import Chinese porcelain to Europe in the sixteenth century. This trade was quite literally “captured” by the Dutch. for those who wish to read more please look up the story of the Santa Catarina. The VOC. Dutch East India company became the powerhouse in this trade and due to a civil war in China they started to import Japanses wares to supplement thier trade.

We have often written about the similarities between decoration on glass and porcelain. There are numerous 18th century glasswares with engraved chinoiserie much of this being directly copied for influenced by porcelain. In this particular case the engraver has been using a pattern or copying a porcelain pattern of Japanese pagodas. a type of building with which a Bohemian engraver is most unlikely to have ever been familiar. Such flagrant plagiarism was simply a means of being fashionable. on trend and nobody was going to sue for breach of copyright.

Excellent condition with no chips cracks or restoration it measures 4 ½ inches tall with a 3 ½ inch top tim and 2 3/8 inch base.
