Triple twists are one of the rarest forms of opaque twist stem and survive in fewer numbers than say colour twists.
Triple twists are often incorrectly described by collectors and dealers alike who assume they are defined by the number of elements in a stem…which is it not the case
Within the stem of the glass –
A Single Series Opaque Twist (SSOT) has one or more elements of the same material in a unified twist. This may be a single spiral thread or indeed two or more multiple spirals of the same meterial producing a compound. For example four spiral threads each exhibiting the same twist and made of the same colour material is still a single series twist.
In a Double Series Twist (DSOT) two or more elements combine within the stem. each element or group of elements being different. So a pair of spiral tapes outside a pair of spiral threads is classified as a double series. A pair of spiral threads outside a gauze column is also a double series.
Double series opaque twists are the most frequently encountered.
A triple series (TSOT) has three different elements or groups of elements within the stem.
In this specific case the stem features a SOLID spiral tape (1) and a single multi-ply spiral (2) that are interwoven and surround a pair of spiral threads (3) and is thus a triple series twist.
All elements run true from the top of the stem to the bottom and is a “true triple series” and not a “fluke” as may arise with some double series opaque twists that may have air entrapped or layered onto some part of the design.
