Description
A magnificent Victorian engraved goblet c1870 with a thistle bowl engraved with fleur de lys around the base of the bowl. set within cut quadrants and a spiked geometrics above. It has an 8 bobbin stem above a large domed foot. again with engraved spiked geometrics. It is a monumental piece.
We know that glass makers produced large pieces for shop display and exhibition purposes and also for gentlemen’s drinking clubs. Some large goblets were produced for communion. this glass when filled would be suffice for quite a large congregation and the priest. choir and organist.
We have found three similar examples . two in the Benjamin Richardson III bequest to the Stourbridge collection with identical design but on a a much smaller scale. In the absence of any better evidence we will say “produced in Wordsley”.
This glass is challenging to drink from. we tried and it was amusing. perhaps that was it’s intended purpose. however we think it more likely to be an expression of pride in their craft. “look at what we can do”
