The regiment was raised in 1685 in Yorkshire. In combination with three Highland companies from the Clan Ross. Clan Sutherland and Clan Fraser a it was instrumental in putting an end to the Jacobite uprising of 1719 at the battle of Glen Shiel. Despite being hugely outnumbered by the Jacobites the aggression shown by the Regiment received praise from all quarters including those Spanish adversaries who never supported the Jacobite cause again.
The regiment was also in the thick of the action at Culloden and their fighting prowess was commented upon in parliament. The regiment also defended Gibraltar during the siege. The colours of the West Yorkshire Regiment didn’t run.
