Similar glasses may be seen in English Glass- Sydney Compton plate 24. Compton is adamant that the “heavy gadrooning” is indicative of an earlier date . late 17th century. In English Glass- RJ Charleston. he too plumps for an earlier date based on the heavy moulding. In our view this example was made between 1730 and 1750. It does not have a folded foot. the glass is brighter than one would anticipate with earlier glasses and is not “soapy” a quality one usually exepcts from earlier examples with a higher potash content. This form clearly became “dated” towards the middle of the 18th century and was surpassed by the more common “wrythen” moulded forms
Delomosne currently have a selction of similar forms for sale and these are worth viewing.
