Description

This Georgian flute moulded ale glass has a tale to tell. The long round funnel bowl has fine flute moulding. The single series multi spiral opaque twist is very fine and exhibits good uniformity as it passes through the large flattened knop. The stem and bowl date to circa 1760.

The foot is a modern replacement. it is conical and has a snapped pontil. The absence of tooling and shear marks. the minor difference in colour. the lack of inclusions within the metal of the foot and the manner in which it adjoins the stem all indicate that this is a replacement. This has clearly been done by a highly skilled restorer and is of museum quality. The replacement is quite obvious and it has not been done with any intention to deceive and ensures that it displays to it’s maximum potential. We have seen glasses in private and museum collections with silver. white metal and wooden feet that were used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to enable rare examples to be displayed. this is an advancement in restoration and is far more in keeping with the original item.

In good original condition such a glass would command a price of £400 to £450

The glass is a very impressive 8 1/4 inches tall with a 2 1/4 inch bowl and a 3 inch foot. No chips or cracks and has a museum standard restoration.
