Ale in the 18th century was far more intoxicating than most modern beers. More akin to barley wine and some winter ales and brews made by modern trappist monks in Belgium that invariably give you a sense of enlightenment that is gone the following morning. These may be dimmunitive compared to a modern tankard but they must never be used for anything as heinous as lager. They are perfectly suitable for sparkling wines and my own favourite a “Rotterdam”. a very large port.
