Description
A superb Georgian Regency Serving Rummer or Small punch bowl c1820.
A very substantial cup bowl with four engraved panels. each showing two cocks at the various stages of mortal combat interspersed with flower heads and star engravings. Sits on a capstan stem above a conical foot with snapped pontil. Such “sporting” topics were usually reserved for items produced for Gentlemans clubs.
English lead. no chips cracks or restoration. it measures 8 ½ inches tall with a 5 ½ inch rim. It would have been used as a serving rummer or punch bowl and this is a particularly fine example.
Serving Rummers as their name suggests are used to hold punch and other concoctions in the centre of the table. The iquid is then transferred to drinking rummers via either a “toddy lifter” which holds a single serving ( a measure”) or via a ladle. Examples such as this. especially with such excellent engravings and in such good condition. are very difficult to find and can be used today in exactly the same way as intended 200+ years ago.
