This is the third one and a half pint Union engraved rummer. This may be an unlikely coincidence.
There were two acts of union. The first in 1707 when Scotland had been bankrupted by the Darien disaster and with the Lowlands of Scotland in a state of ruin following the one of the greatest acts of folly of all time then the barriers to Union between England and Scotland were removed to prevent the total collapse of the Scottish economy. civil unrest and starvation.
The bilateral Acts of Union between Great Britain and Ireland were far more politically motivated and we are still living with the consequences today. The causality that is the backstop began with the well meaning acts of Union in 1800 and the subsequent failure of George III to deliver on the promise of catholic emancipation for fully twenty five years.
This is engraved with roses and thistles dexter and sinister and shamrocks blended in on both sides. A true symbol of unity. The flag is not the second union flag which incorporates the St Patrick’s saltire but the first Union flag alone. This is indicative that the glass was engraved at a date shortly after the act. The older Union flags were removed following royal proclamation in 1801.
