This could be a small serving rummer that would be used to replenish the glasses on many with the aid of a toddy lifter. We believe this to be a simply a large rummer. Quart tankards were commonplace throughout the 18th and early 19th century. the first age of lavish consumption. A quart is still a legal measure of beer in public houses. however too few have beer glasses large enough other than the standard ‘yard’ glass which holds two and a half pints and are rarely used other than for wagers and special occasions.
