Description
This is one of the finest period masonic engraved glasses that we have seen in 10 years.
Rather than endeavour to fully describe and interpret the wealth of engravings I will let the images do this for me. the cognoscenti will know. The engravings are too numerous and complex to mention all. FHC is Faith Hope and Charity and is engraved between the rungs of Jacobs’s ladder. The set square and compass stands above the Holy Book on the three steps or degrees of life. birth. life and death. An altar with three candles that represents the holy trinity. An engraved coffin stands next to the barley ears of plenty. There is an engraved Star of David surrounding the letter G for God the Almighty. an engraved square floor that represents happiness and sadness. the sun to rule the day and the moon to rule the night…it just goes on. Please enjoy the pictures.
The glass has a good period colour and contains seeds. striations and tooling marks as expected and dates from c1770. It is a large plain stem goblet which stands 7 ½ inches tall with a 4 ½ inch bowl and 4 ¼ inch foot. The foot has original tooling marks and has not been restored. There are two small chips in the foot as shown. which could be removed if required. however we simply do not believe that it is necessary as they do not detract from aesthetic quality of such a superb and large glass
